AUTOBOTS WAGE A BATTLE TO DESTROY THE EVIL FORCES OF THE DECEPTICONS…
Having what some would consider a semi-encyclopedic knowledge or the trivial and dorklike, I can tell you that 2005 is the year of the Transformers. I’d be lying to you if I said I haven’t been waiting for this year for a while. So long in fact that I entirely forgot I was waiting for it at all. But before I get too far into this whole thing, let’s take a step back.
First of all, we all know what Transformers are, right? If you don’t, I honestly don’t have time to go into right now. Not only that, but I feel kinda sorry for you. I’m not saying that you’re life is empty or anything like that. I’m just saying that you missed out on something. I feel for you in the same way that I feel for someone who never played with Pogs.
Anyway, when I was a child I was really into Go-Bots and Transformers. I wasn’t alone in this. I imagine most kids in my generation were a part of this cult phenomenon, but then again I like to imagine a lot of people are with me on things that I’m pretty much experiencing all by myself. Being the anal-retentive little bastard that I was, I refused to let the Transformers fight against the Go-Bots and vice versa. They each had their own universe and mixing the two was something that I just couldn’t bring myself to do. Despite this fact, my Transformers and Go-Bots behaved in remarkably similar ways. Whenever the bad robots would attack the good robots, instead of fighting back the good robots would just run away. This, as you can imagine, was a pretty good indication of how tough I was as a child. The only fight I ever got into was with a good friend of mine. I don’t remember what happened, but needless to say he put up his fists ready fight me and I took off. He chased me around his dad’s car for awhile until he got bored and the two of us decided to go dig holes in the dirt.
As expected my Transformers thing died out around the same time I discovered that girls weren’t really into Transformers. I packed all my old toys away, and my mom put them wherever she puts all my toys that she thinks my kids will someday enjoy, and with other things on my mind I more or less forgot that Transformers ever existed.
That was until I was about sixteen. One day at the video store Jeremy and I were bored (which could have described any day that we were there), started getting nostalgic for the good old days and wandered over into the kids section to pick out a movie that neither of us had seen in ten plus years.
We settled on Transformers the movie.
Instantly my fascination with the franchise returned. I went out and bought the movie, and shortly after that I bought the entire first season of the television show. I didn’t get obsessed with it or anything like that. I just really thought it was a good show. I watched the movie about a dozen times, took a trip through the first season, and ever since then they’ve been sitting on my shelf at home gathering dust.
But then over break, as I was cleaning my room, I decided that I needed something to have on in the background. So, I grabbed a couple of movies that I hadn’t seen in a while, one of which happened to be the Transformer’s movie.
For those of you who have never seen the movie before, or at least aren’t as familiar with it as I am, the opening lines are spoken by a narrator and the first thing he says is “The year is 2005.” As you probably guessed, I didn’t resume cleaning my room for about an hour and a half.
But now I’m left wondering: why did the creators pick the year 2005? Did they honestly believe that by this time we’d be hanging out with gigantic, free-thinking robots who could transform into any number of different vehicles? Or did they pick that date because they knew that the kids who watched it at the age of five would get a renewed interest in their early twenties when the year finally came around?
I know it’s probably the second one, but part of me would like to think that it’s the first…
THERE’S NEVER ENOUGH TIME…
I know I’ve said it before, but I just don’t have enough time to blog regularly. Thus, I have decided on a solution: I will post on my blog whenever Zach Braff posts on his. Before you judge me for this, rest assured that this has nothing to do with misplaced hero worship, or anything along those lines. I’m simply using this as a barometer. I figure as busy as I am, he’s gotta be way more busy. So whenever he finds time to do it, then I guess I can too.
Makes perfect sense to me. Don’t judge…
